Niamh Shaw & Úna Kavanagh present ‘That’s About The Size Of It’, a part-lecture, part-biographical, interactive, Science Art visual performance piece about Niamh’s ‘What If?’ moments of her life, CERN, String Theory & Dimensions, to explore our existence, our life’s work and the effect of choice, chance and coincidence on our life journey.

A Show In A Bag production, ‘That’s About The Size Of It’ has been created through the support of The Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council and Arts@CERN and is part of Dublin City of Science 2012 official programme of Public Engagement events.

Reviews:

“…..The audience leaves with something new: a rational understanding of the God particle….Shaw and co-creator Úna Kavanagh stay true to atomic principles..” The Irish Times

“..Shaw is passionate about her subject…and does a beautiful job of poignantly, and yes, scientifically, exploring her own life, which in turn invites us to explore the roads we ourselves have not taken.” ITM

MOON

Date: June 25 2012, 22:30

Admission: €15/€12 from the Cork Midsummer Festival box office

The Apollo 11 Moon Landing as you have never experienced it before: a play of light, images and live music in the atmospheric courtyard of CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory.

Moon features a series of film loops, created by Spanish video artist Esperanza Collado from footage originally distributed by NASA to schools, universities and news agencies in 1969/1970, screened through multiple projectors and accompanied by an evocative soundtrack performed live by the Buzz Aldrin Allstars.

The Buzz Aldrin Allstars are a collection of likeminded musicians looking to keep the kraut rock tradition alive. They feature members from some of Dublin’s finest bands: Si Schroeder, 3epkano, Halfset, Strands and Beautiful Unit.

Please Note: Complimentary bus leaves Bus Station, Parnell Place at 22:00 and returns after the show

StarSound – Sounds from the Universe

StarSound is an audio visual installation on data from the 32m radio telescope at National Space Centre. Experiencing this interactive installation will immerse you in the world of astronomy and astrophysics, allowing you to interact with the astronomical instruments of CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory. The visual output is an immersive representation of a map of the stars surrounding earth. The user points on a certain position on the map and through that, adjusts the direction of the telescopes, which then provide an acoustic representation of the live data received from that particular position allowing you to listen to the sounds of the Universe.  VIDEO

Harmony of the Spheres – Improvisation for Radio Telescope and Theremin

Harmony of the Spheres created by Cork based musician Brian Leach is a musical piece incorporating a live feed of data, streamed directly from the 32m radio telescope at National Space Centre. The live signals are manipulated into playing a ten tone scale devised by splitting the octave into ten equal parts. Some of the harmonies produced are new to our ears, while others are reminiscent of Western or Pythagorean intervals.

Astronomical Entanglements

For this exhibition David Upton has drawn for inspiration on the astronomical and socialist histories of Cork City focusing on the plough constellation as a symbol which at once embodies both the celestial and the earthly. In using archival material, photography, video and cast iron and aluminium sculpture David mixes themes of the local with the cosmic. Through a recent engagement with an outdated iron casting process at the National Sculpture Factory and use of images taken with CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory’s optical telescope metaphors are made to the primal processes of creation and destruction.
