Earth Hour

Earth Hour 2019 is a global campaign that seeks to raise awareness of environmental issues via a symbolic “Lights Out” event. This Lights Out event also serves as a wonderful opportunity to discuss Ireland’s Dark Sky Heritage. As recipients of the International Astronomical Union‘s  Dark Skies For All fund, CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory, and our Dark Sky Partners throughout the country, are affirming our commitment to promoting and protecting Ireland’s astronomical heritage by using Earth Hour to launch a 6 Week program of Dark Sky Events. See Dark Sky Ireland for further information of Ireland’s Dark Sky Heritage.

Cycle through the Planets with with Dr. Darren McAdam-O’Connell, and Cork Environmental Forum.

A guided cycle through a scale model of the solar system using Cork landmarks to represent the planets. We will “visit” each planet in turn, learn a little about it, get a feeling of the scale of the solar system and have some fun on the way. This will be followed by a lights out event and telescope observing session in Blackrock Castle Observatory.

Meeting point St Patricks Bridge 6pm arriving at BCO between 7 and 8pm

Dark Sky Awareness Workshop  with CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory and Eddie Lyons of Cork Sky Friendly.
