Niamh heading to Baikonur ! Competition to celebrate launch of Alex Gerst to ISS

Calling all National Schools! Space Launch Competition

Next week our Artist in Residence and space explorer, Dr. Niamh Shaw will be at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakstan. She’s there to witness the live launch of our next European astronaut, Alexander Gerst to the International Space Station.

And we’d like YOU and your school to get involved!

ESA Astronaut Alexander Gerst, along with astronauts Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos will blast off from Baikonur cosmodrome (the world’s first and largest operational space launch facility), on June 6th at 12.11pm in their Soyuz M-09 spacecraft and will arrive at the International Space Station two days later, marking the start of Alexander’s Horizons mission.
Niamh will be there, on site at Baikonur Cosmodrome from June 3rd, to capture and experience launch and liftoff of Alexander’s mission. Sharing with us her first experience of a live launch, what’s happening on the ground, and meeting the people involved who regularly launch astronauts into space, she’ll be giving us daily updates, photos and movies from Baikonaur. And, as with all her space adventures, she’ll be bringing her very own Stargazer Lottie with her.

An exciting trip indeed and YOU can be a part of it-  if you have a picture or painting about this launch that you would like Niamh to bring with her on her trip, get in touch THIS WEEK!!

COMPETITION! Get creative about Space

To celebrate Niamh’s trip to the live launch of our ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, we have another 5 ‘Inspired by Space‘ prizes to give away to the top 5 school entries. We simply want YOU to make us something that is ‘Inspired by Space’- something creative that expresses in the best way, what space means to you. It can be a class project entry or a group of individual entries presented in any way you want- a picture, a poem, a song, a movie, a sculpture, a knitted scarf, an embroidered pillow, a cake, a cookie, wall art- as long as its creative and you submit your entry BEFORE June 22nd.

If you win, Niamh will come to your school and bring her special ‘Inspired by Space‘ space and drama workshop (in Autumn or Spring terms next year 2018/2019) created with Lottie Dolls. The workshop explores our place in space as well as thinking about who we want to be when we grow up. Aimed at 3rd class & 4th class, each winning school also receives their very own Stargazer Lottie Doll.

To enter, simply send us your entries marked ‘INSPIRED BY SPACE COMPETITION’ by email or post before FRIDAY JUNE 22nd at (by email) or Blackrock Castle Observatory, Blackrock, Cork (by post).

The ‘Inspired by Space’ workshop covers geography and maths topics of the primary school curriculum for 3rd and 4th classes and is supported by Science Foundation Ireland and ESERO Ireland.  The workshop content was developed in 2016 by Dr Niamh and delivered to schools in Cork, Limerick and Dublin in 2016.

The workshop is available for DEIS schools to book for free with a preference being given to girls in 3rd and 4th class.
